Talking Dog Canine Communication Consultants

Dudley and the Dude

We teach the skills you need to create a confident  and happy team.

For Dogs

Hey Dogs,

Are you having trouble understanding your human? Does your human just not get what you’re trying to tell them? That really sucks, it’s enough to drive a dog mental. I know because I’ve been there.

My life was miserable until I met Dudley. I couldn’t understand my human and I just couldn’t get anything right for him. I’m supposed to be a herding dog; my family are all ace herding dogs, but I was a total disgrace. My human thought I was useless, and I was a nervous wreck. Then one day I was shoved in a box and put on a plane. I was terrified, what was going to happen to me?  When the box was opened this strange guy was calling my name. I didn’t know whether to run or bite him, but he was really patient with me, got me into his car and took me to my new home.

That’s when everything changed. Dudley seemed to understand me, and I could understand him! What a relief! It took a while, but I slowly learned to trust again. I found I could do lots of things I never even knew existed when I was on the farm and I rediscovered my confidence. I even found that herding sheep and cows is easy. I can do it, just like the rest of my family. My life is sweet.

So, don’t despair dogs. Just get your human to contact Dudley and we’ll swing by for a chat. He’s really good at talking to humans as well as dogs and I’d be very happy to meet you guys and help you get things back on track. There’ll be some work to do but it’ll be fun, and life will get a whole lot better, for you and for your humans.

Looking forward to touching noses soon,

Dude

For Humans

What we do and how we do it.

At Talking Dog we are dedicated to helping you develop the skills required to manage, effectively communicate with, and train your dog to transform your relationship and your dog’s behaviour. Our aim is for your dog to be able to behave appropriately in the wide variety of situations it will encounter, in the home, with children and visitors, in your vehicle, in the community, with other dogs and strange people, at the barbeque, in the cafe, in the street, in the hardware store, at the market, in the country with livestock, just wherever your lifestyle takes you.

We do this by first meeting with you and your dog in your environment. I first need to understand you, your situation, and your dog. Although the principles of canine communication are universal, people and dogs are all individuals and have different needs. Our programs are customised to the needs of you and your dog. The first task is to assess your needs and what will work with your dog. At the conclusion of it you will receive a written report and a proposal.

This is a no obligation, no charge consultation. If you decide to proceed with the program, then this is charged for as session one. If you or I don’t think our services are appropriate for you then there is no charge and I simply wish you well. If we decide to proceed then we agree to meet for a number of sessions at times and places to suit both parties. At the conclusion of the agreed program, we will review progress and decide what if any further assistance is needed.

Canine communication is a skill. It can be learnt, and it can be taught. We work by first identifying what will work best for your dog. I then demonstrate this to you so that you can see that it works. Next, I break down what it is that I am doing and coach you to be able to do it. Each session is accompanied by detailed instructions and notes explaining what, why and how I am doing it, plus any suggestions on how you might improve the management of your dog and its environment. Every person and every dog learns in their own way and at their own pace, so progress is determined by the needs and abilities of you and your dog.

Dudley

About Dudley

I have a lifelong interest in communication and learning in both humans and other mammals. Over the last fifty plus years this has taken me from working on farms as a school student to studying psychology at university to owning and training a variety of dogs as well as working in different roles involving training and coaching people to improve their personal skills and wellbeing.

In recent years many people, both urban and rural, have become dog owners either for the first time or after a long hiatus and have found living with and training their new dogs more difficult and less enjoyable than they expected. After much urging from friends and associates I launched Talking Dog in 2020 to bring my experience and knowledge to their aid. My aim is to help reduce stress and promote greater happiness in both humans and dogs by promoting greater understanding, communication and practical skills for all concerned.

About Dude

Dude is a Working Kelpie born in 2014 at Illawarra stud in Waimarama, Hawkes Bay. Both his parents are imports from Australia and come from top stock dog breeders and trainers and he has many famous working dogs featured in his breeding record. He was sold as a pup to be a working dog but this did not work out and in 2017 he was given to Dudley.

Since being in Dudley’s care he has transformed from an uneducated and very nervous dog to a confident versatile dog equally at home working sheep and cattle, entertaining small children, hanging out in urban cafes, and being an integral part of the Talking Dog organisation.

Dude is not only the inspiration and face for Talking Dog he is also a paws on worker in the process of educating and training humans and dogs alike. He is always happy to meet new people and dogs and to help out as needed.
